Berkeley, Missouri – (June 24, 2019) — UCP Heartland awarded the construction contract for its new 20,000 square foot disability program facility to S. M. Wilson, a 100% employee-owned general contracting firm with almost a 100-year history serving the region.

“We could not be more pleased with this partnership,” Shari Clay, President and CEO of UCP Heartland said. “S. M. Wilson takes great pride in their projects and focuses on connecting people and resources. They’re the perfect partner for UCP Heartland.”

The facility is planned to replace UCP Heartland’s current adult day program facility in University City, called Canterbury Center. “For many decades, Canterbury Center has served the community well,” Clay said. “To fulfill our goal of providing integrated community services close to our clients’ homes, we required a new facility in north St. Louis County.”

The new facility will be designed to optimize access, with all services provided on the same floor. The building will utilize universal design technology and in addition to private program spaces, will include training and recreation space for program participants.

All rooms and hallways are designed to be extra wide for wheelchairs to move with ease. The program will include extensive adaptive equipment and new technology. The Berkeley facility is targeted to open later this year.
