S. M. Wilson completed Central Intermediate School’s new 11,040-square-foot gymnasium addition for the 2025-2026 school year. With bleacher seating for more than 500 people, the versatile space hosts all-school morning meetings, physical education, school performances, assemblies, athletic programs and community events.

Key features of the new gym include a full-size competition gymnasium, bleacher seating with a capacity for up to 502 guests, storage areas, restrooms and a physical education office.

The school previously utilized a small, multi-purpose room, which was renovated as part of the project into a specialized center for students with special needs, featuring two large classrooms, adjacent sensory rooms and two therapy rooms.

“The ability to have all of our students in one space for morning meetings and physical education has been a game-changer for our school culture. The new gym is a beautiful and functional space that will benefit our students in so many ways,” said Central Intermediate School Principal Kelli Secor.

Students were able to watch the construction progress through classroom windows and playgrounds that surround the job site.

“To finally see the looks on the kids’ faces as they entered for the first time made the entire process worth it. This new space provides opportunities for our students and staff that were not possible in the old facility. We are excited to see the great things that will take place in this gym for years to come,” said Roxana CUSD #1 Superintendent Jason Dandurand

The construction of the new gymnasium was a top priority for the Board of Education, stemming from a strategic planning process that began in 2009 to address long-term facility needs.

“This new gymnasium is not just a building, but a symbol of our commitment to providing the best possible resources for our students. It’s a versatile space that will serve our school and our community for generations,” said Dandurand.
