Gene Zick
Superintendent | Field Master | Trusted Client Partner
Gene Zick joined S. M. Wilson in 1964 and rose through the ranks to become one of the company’s most respected Superintendents. Over four decades, Gene became a foundational field leader for our most complex educational and healthcare projects, serving as a primary reason the firm earned significant repeat business with major institutional clients.

Gene commanded respect on every project he touched. He was known for his calm under pressure, his ability to navigate immense technical complexity, and a commitment to being 100% present on-site. Clients valued him for his judgment; teams valued him for his problem-solving; and the company valued him for his craftsmanship and unwavering reliability.
Gene’s leadership was instrumental in delivering what was the firm’s largest and most complex project at the time: the Washington University School of Medicine & BJC HealthCare — BJC Institute of Health in St. Louis. This $206 million, 675,000 SF, 11-story facility required a fast-track schedule and LEED Gold certification, all while housing high-stakes medical and research functions.
Under Gene’s field supervision, the project achieved extraordinary results:
-
Efficiency: Finished $4 million under budget.
-
Innovation: Constructed over an active Metrolink light rail system, a sequencing challenge that saved 12 months of the schedule through master-class planning.
-
Safety & Sustainability: Achieved an OSHA Strategic Partnership and surpassed its LEED targets.
Through projects like this, Gene did more than just deliver buildings; he delivered confidence. He helped establish S. M. Wilson as the go-to partner for institutions demanding operational excellence and continuity of care.
Gene Zick is one of the pivotal Wilsonites who built our legacy, exemplifying what it means to lead from the field with mastery, humility, and consistency.
