Bernie Loft Vice President of Field Operations | Superintendent’s Superintendent | Builder of Builders

Bernie Loft joined S. M. Wilson in 1982 and became one of the most influential field leaders in the company’s history. After 17 years as our top Project Superintendent, Bernie was selected to serve as the firm’s first VP of Field Operations—a role that fundamentally shaped how field work, safety, logistics, and quality are managed across the company today.
In this inaugural leadership position, Bernie was responsible for overseeing all on-site construction activities. He managed our entire team of superintendents, ensuring every project had the labor, materials, equipment, and support needed to deliver work safely and on schedule. Bernie was a constant presence on our jobsites, serving as a master resource for constructability, scheduling, and real-time problem-solving.
Known throughout the St. Louis construction community, Bernie held a powerful industry presence. He was a champion for safety and professional development, participating in OSHA initiatives and industry-wide field forums. His leadership didn’t just improve our projects; it elevated field standards across the region and strengthened S. M. Wilson’s reputation for reliable, high-quality execution.
What truly set Bernie apart was his “Field-First” instinct. He understood that the jobsite is where the work becomes real. By mentoring the next generation of superintendents and building systems that supported field teams under pressure, he instilled a culture of discipline and professionalism that remains our gold standard.
Bernie Loft is one of the pivotal Wilsonites who built our legacy, defining the excellence of S. M. Wilson’s field operations for decades to come.
