St. Louis, Mo., April 7, 2010 – S. M. Wilson & Co. and Project Manager Barry Alt have received formal recognition from the Society of American Military Engineers for exceeding contractual expectations and developing effective solutions to ensure the successful completion the Permanent Party Barracks Phase III construction project at Ft. Leonard Wood in south-central Missouri.
The Society recognized the S. M. Wilson project team and Rosemann Associates, the project architect, for ‘turning over the completed the residential-style barracks in phases – instead of at the end of the project -- to help address the shortage of barracks at Ft. Leonard Wood. This was accomplished at no additional cost to the government. The project is also on track to receive a LEED Gold rating by the U. S. Green Building Council, exceeding the contract requirement for LEED Silver.’
According to the project team’s nomination by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, ‘Project Manager Barry Alt’s skills in oversight and management have been invaluable. These projects utilized good design processes to develop engineering solutions that led to high quality, durable, aesthetically pleasing and easily maintainable facilities. The Permanent Party Barracks project has delivered a new standard of living to permanent party troops at Ft. Leonard Wood.’
The Society annually acknowledges people and organizations that have helped make a difference and made life better for all through the employment of science, technology, engineering or mathematics in military construction projects. Alt and the S. M. Wilson team received their honor at the Society’s annual engineer dinner held recently at Fort Leonard Wood.
S. M. Wilson and Rosemann worked together on the previous two phases of the project. In January 2008, S. M. Wilson completed the $12.9 million Phase I of the program. The $13.6 million Phase II was completed in September 2008, and the $22 million third phase of the program was completed in early 2010. The community featured construction of 64 new multi-level apartment-style buildings, plus parking lots and recreational facilities over a 36 acre site.
